BQ is a standard wireline core-drilling size. The hole is about 60.0 mm in diameter and the recovered core 36.5 mm.
When to choose BQ
BQ is the smallest size in the series. The sample is small, but drilling is fastest and cheapest, and a rig reaches its greatest depth in this size. That is why BQ is often used in deep holes: the hole is collared in a larger size and continued in BQ once the difficult ground is behind it.
The general rule: a larger diameter gives more sample for analysis, a smaller one reaches depth faster and at lower cost.
Compatibility
In core drilling every tool must belong to one size system. To drill BQ, the bit, reaming shell, core barrel, rods, overshot and core boxes must all be BQ too. When mixing tools from different makers, check that threads and dimensions match.
