NQ core boxes
Plastic NQ core boxes for storing, transporting and logging core.
Core boxes keep samples in depth order so geologists can log the section accurately. NQ box channels are sized for 47.6 mm core.
Core is a project's most valuable result: once the hole is closed, it is the only record of the ground. Core is stored for years and re-logged and re-assayed, so the quality of the box and correct labelling matter as much as the drilling itself.
Design and capacity
An NQ box has 5 channels of about 1 m each, so it holds roughly 5 m of core. The dividers stop the core rolling or shifting. The lid protects it from dust, rain and falling out in transit.
Material
Plastic boxes are made from UV-stabilised polymer. They are light, do not rot or warp under wet core, and last for years in an open yard. Unlike wooden or metal boxes, they do not soak up water or rust. They stack securely, saving space in storage and volume in transport.
Labelling
- Mark each box with the hole ID, box number, and from and to depths.
- Mark the end of every run with a core block showing the depth.
- Show core-loss intervals with a gap or a dedicated block.
- Photograph filled boxes wet and dry.
How many boxes you need
The count is the total metres divided by one box's capacity. For 1000 m of NQ core, for example, you need about 200 boxes. We recommend a 5–10% reserve.
